WIXOM, Mich. A 75-year-old Army veteran has died months after a DoorDash driver punched him during a dispute over speeding outside his home, his family says. Prosecutors are now weighing whether to upgrade the charges.

What police say happened Lloyd Poole was found unconscious in the road near Barberry Circle and Windingway Drive at about 5:21 p.m. on December 28, 2025. Officers were responding to a report of an elderly man lying in the street, according to the Wixom Police Department. A preliminary investigation found that Poole had confronted a driver about speeding through the residential neighborhood.

The driver, Ryan Daniel Turner, 40 at the time, of Wixom, later turned himself in at the police station. Police say Turner admitted he punched Poole because he felt threatened. FOX 2 Detroit reported that Turner pulled over, got out, and the two exchanged words before the punch. Police say Poole fell and struck his head on the pavement, and that Turner then drove away.

Months in a coma and seven surgeries Poole was rushed to a hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery to remove part of his skull. His stepdaughter, Lindsey Gonzalez, told CBS Detroit that he had "seven different brain surgeries," along with repeated infections and pneumonia. He had remained in critical condition since December. He never regained consciousness and died on May 16, 2026.

His daughter, Jen Shaw, told FOX 2 Detroit that her father was an Army veteran who took pride in honoring fallen service members and had sailed for years. Shaw said he was walking his dogs, as he often did, when the driver sped past. Gonzalez said Poole and his wife, Linda, had just returned from a trip to Ireland and were planning to visit Alaska.

The charges against the DoorDash driver Turner was arraigned on one count of aggravated assault and released on a $35,000 bond, according to Wixom police via CBS Detroit. FOX 2 Detroit later reported that his bond was revoked and that he was placed on house arrest with a tether. He is scheduled for a hearing on June 17.

After Poole's death, the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office said it is reviewing the case and may amend the charges based on the evidence. "We will continue to seek justice for the Poole family," the office said in a statement. Turner has not been convicted in this case.

A prior road-rage case Court records show Turner had an earlier road-rage case in 2022. FOX 2 Detroit reported that he was convicted in that assault and later lost his license, yet was making deliveries for DoorDash at the time of the December encounter. Fox News Digital described the 2022 matter as an arrest, and Breitbart reported the charge was downgraded to a lesser offense. Accounts of the outcome vary.

DoorDash's response A DoorDash spokesperson called the death heartbreaking. The company said it has "permanently removed the individual's access to the platform" and is cooperating with law enforcement.

For Poole's family, the hardest part is how small the trigger was. He never threw a punch and never chased anyone. He had simply asked a DoorDash driver to slow down on his own street. As the case moves toward its June court date, his family is pushing for the charges to be upgraded.
